GRANDE PRAIRIE SIRENS

Sirens rugby teams fare well at Jasper season-opening tournament

The Grande Prairie’s women’s rugby program sent its two teams to a friendly tournament in Jasper last Saturday.

The North of 55 Sirens dropped both games they played, while the Sirens won the Consolation B-side after winning four of their five games on the day.

Women’s program head coach Mark Rogers was very pleased with how both teams fared.

“These were really our first test matches. A lot of players have not played with each other before, and a lot of players were new. We also had a bunch of older players that were there supporting, and for us it was more of a learning experience… not going there expecting to win or anything like that.”

Rogers says the weekend exceeded all of his expectations going into the start of the season.

“It was a learning experience for me and all of the athletes that were on the field – some of us just coming together and playing with each other (for the first time). And keeping in mind that I have not coached in two years and a lot of these players have not played in a couple of years because of COVID and stuff. So it is exciting.”

Rogers says the future looks very bright for the Women’s rugby program in the city.

The regular season for both Sirens’ teams begins later this month.
