DCOY Community Hub seeking support to reach $3.5 million goal

Much needed steps in the plan to restore and renovate the historical D Company Armouries building in Grande Prairie into a community hub are done, but now donations and supporters are wanted to kick off the project.

In 2018, the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie pledged $1.8 million towards the DCOY Community Hub Project.

Engineering drawings are completed, land and development permits acquired, and now fundraising is required to start repairs and modernization to the existing building. Another 12,000 sq feet will be added for boardrooms, classrooms, and additional spaces.

Bruce Tattrie, DCOY Community Hub Project Chair and President of the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie says they’ve had a few stops and starts with the project due to the pandemic.

“We need another $1.7 million to finish this. Under ideal circumstances if people or corporations in town and maybe some of the other municipalities join in… it’s not huge order for Grande Prairie but people have to get behind it,” says Tattrie.

“I’m optimistic that within a year… I think it will take a year probably to raise that or maybe more. We will go as long as it takes.” Tattrie noted on the other $1.7 million still needed.

The DCOY Armouries has been used for multiple military training groups since 1942. Currently the building serves as a base for over 200 Air & Army Cadets and in the past it was rented out for community and private events.

“The building itself is designed to be a community hub, so basically any not-for-profit can use it and book it; weddings, city social gatherings within the communities,”

Chris Warkentin, MP for Grande Prairie-Mackenzie spoke about the restoration project saying it allows the city to remember the history of the community.

“Buildings are important because sometimes stories get lost when buildings no longer exist. So when we have something that is this historical in a community that is as young as ours, it’s absolutely essential we hold onto the importance of the stories and the memories,” Warkentin says.

When the $1.7 million for the project is received by supporters, construction and restoration of the project will be able to get underway.
