Mobile Outreach Unit expands hours on weekend in Grande Prairie

May 10, 2022 | 10:15 AM

On May 6, the City of Grande Prairie’s Mobile Outreach Unit Program expanded it’s hours of operation on Saturday and Sunday.

The hours are now consistent with weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

MOP Manager Chelsea Frizzell says they heard from community members that they saw a need for increased hours over the weekend, as they were only operating from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

“There was a lack of hours first thing in the morning and at night when the evening shelter opens, so we weren’t able to provide transportation.”

The MOP provides supports to clients like: proactive patrols, and increased presence in the community and provide transportation to vulnerable population to the emergency overnight shelter which opens at 10:00 p.m.

“If there’s a concern with a individuals well-being, if they’re loitering, or if they’re out in the cold, might look like they need some support. It could also be if they are trespassing or needle debris… things like that.” Frizzell explained what kind of situations MOP would respond to.

Frizzell says MOP would be better to call than other enforcement for certain situations.

“We are here to help mitigate those calls to RCMP and other health services as well for any concern regarding social issues.”

“We work closely with RCMP, the hospital, community paramedics… anyone really with their boots on the ground that are offering support to the same demographic.”

MOP has two 10-passenger units that are labelled with the city’s logo and “always work in teams of two for client and staff safety.” says Frizzell.

You can contact the MOP directly by calling 780-830-7094 with a social concern or issue or by emailing them at mobileoutreach@cityofgp.com.
