Late August event to replace Municipal Government Day

City Hall says a new event in late August will be held, in part, to draw people downtown after years of construction.

Experience Grande Prairie will be held the weekend of August 27 on 101 Avenue in front of the Farmer’s Market.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says it will also serve as a replacement for Municipal Government Day.

“Some of the old highlights where kids could come and climb on fire trucks and you could come and have a hot dog and talk to a councillor or somebody who works for transportation or somebody who works at a recreation facility, we’ll still have that part of it at Experience Grande Prairie. This is also a more traditional event where there will be food trucks and entertainment.”

Clayton says they wanted to celebrate downtown by holding it there this year.

“And also, to give the businesses downtown an opportunity to highlight and expose themselves to a large number of people over a weekend.”

Clayton says there is a chance this event could be held in places like South Bear or Muskoseepi Park in future years.

At its last meeting, council approved redirecting $21,000 set aside in the budget for Municipal Government Day and instead putting it towards Experience Grande Prairie. Council also approved taking $35,000 from a reserve fund for the event.
