Peace Region welcomes new STARS Airbus H-145 Helicopter

May 25, 2022 | 7:26 PM

The Peace Region welcomed number nine of the ten new $13 million dollar STARS Airbus H-145 helicopters.

Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin was at the event on Wednesday thanking the people of the Peace Region and Grande Prairie for all their donations and support through the years.

“Really over a couple of few years where we saw the oil industry collapse, we saw Covid-19 hit, we continue to see the generosity of municipalities and companies who were really giving out of the belief that it was a necessity, cutting back in other areas to make sure STARS has funding,” said Warkentin.

President and CEO of STARS, Andrea Roberston was also at the event thanking all the people who have supported and helped fund STARS since they first came to Grande Prairie in 2006 up until now.

Robertson added this type of community support allows STARS to go on over 4,000 missions to hundreds of communities across Northern Alberta and the Peace Region.

Senior Municipal Relations Liaison for STARS, Glenda Farnden was also at the event discussing how much of a difference this is for not only pilots, but medical staff as well.

“They’re very excited it’s like night and day when you really think about it. If we were driving vehicles that were almost 40 years old now, compared to what we have today with the technology and the safety features it’s no different than the helicopter world,” Farnden stated.

Farnden wants to thank all the people that have supported and donated to STARS over the last few years, putting aside money during a tough time because residents know it’s worth it. She did also add STARS is going to sell old helicopters after being replaced for other people to enjoy.
