Wildfire danger high in GPFA, moderate in PRFA

May 25, 2022 | 3:22 PM

The wildfire danger has risen to high in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

The Alberta government would like to remind residents that wherever campfires are allowed, they are to be properly extinguished using the soak, stir, soak again method until logs are cold to the touch.

Since March 1st, 2022, 12 wildfires have burned almost six hectares of the Grande Prairie Forest area. 11 of these fires have been put out at this time.

Residents are reminded that from March 1 to October 31 fire permits are required for any outdoor flames in a Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Fire permits are free from your local forestry office or available online by clicking here.

If you do see any suspicious fires in your area, please contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

The fire hazard is rated moderate in the Peace River Forest Area.

Fire watchers say while green-up has begun, coniferous trees are very dry and have reached what they call “maximum dryness,” meaning fire can spread quickly.

They are asking anyone operating heavy machinery in the forest to watch for things like sparks that can cause a wildfire.
