Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Donor Appreciation Event

May 29, 2022 | 12:55 PM

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital hosted its Donor Appreciation Event Saturday, an achievement ten years in the making.

The Hospital was handed over from the Alberta government to Alberta Health Services in 2020 but wasn’t opened to the public till December of 2021.

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital raised just over $20 million dollars for this project.

This money went to not only building the hospital but state-of-the-art equipment as well, such as Ventilators for the ICU and Emergency Response Unit, four Portable Bladder Scanners, and Medical Carriages giving people who have been paralyzed or have a disability, the opportunity to do things like ride a bike.

The budget for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital was originally created for a hospital serving 70,000 people. But as the need grew in the area so did the budget and plans, leading to a hospital that’s able to serve 300,000 residents.

Dawn Miller, Major Gifts Officer for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital mentioned some key groups that made all this possible…

“One of are’s was in Fairview, the Hospital Foundation there, ponied up $100,000, and then we started our partnership with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and that was $1.5 million, we also have a partnership with the Alberta Cancer Foundation as well to support our Cancer Centre here, and that was a million dollars.”

Miller added that now with the completion of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Alberta Health Services is beginning to start moving workers from the QEII over to the new building, leaving the Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a medical clinic and office space for workers.

Miller is very excited about what the future holds for health care in our city and greater area adding that when she began this project ten years ago she would never think it would get this far…

“I just want to thank all the donors, I’m so incredibly grateful and so proud of everything we’ve done over the last few years, and as I said I didn’t have much experience when I started so I’m so grateful for them as I learned we kind of grew together.”
