Grande Prairie records 10 opioids deaths in the first quarter of 2022

Alberta Health says Grande Prairie recorded 10 deaths from non-pharmaceutical opioids in the first three months of this year.

The province includes fentanyl, heroin and designer opiates in the non-pharmaceutical opioids category. These drugs accounted for all the deaths from illicit substances in Grande Prairie in the first quarter of 2022.

The total breaks down to; four deaths in January, one in February, and five in March.

There were 11 such deaths in the first three months of last year and eight in the last quarter of 2021.

The province reported on Friday, June 3 that there were 120 deaths province-wide in March, the lowest total since April 2021.

Lethbridge had 37 deaths in the first quarter and the highest rate of deaths per 100,000 person-years out of Alberta’s seven biggest cities in each of the first three months of this year.
