St. Joes RAP Program student gains work experience on new Louis Riel Catholic School

A 17-year-old student from Grande Prairie’s St. Joseph Catholic High School is gaining work experience credits towards graduation and money to save for his future through the Registered Apprenticeship Program.

Nicholas Lavallee decided to take part in RAP after his mother told him about it.

“The more I heard about it, the more I started to realize… yeah this is something I could get into, something I am interested in. Sure enough, I looked into it and decided that I would stick with it,” says Lavallee.

Kamwin Electric took on Lavallee as a RAP student about a year ago, which got him more time to be in school… but in a different way. He got to work on the brand new Louis Riel Catholic School, set to be open in the next academic year.

“I got familiar with tools, I learned how to work with the people around me. I had a really great crew, even from other companies… they were all around nice people so I felt comfortable pretty quickly on the job and I think that helped me learn.”

“There were a lot of little odd tasks. I did a lot of the lights in the ceiling. I put plugs in the walls, pulling wires from panels to boxes.”

He says one of the cooler things about the school is the colour-coding. “There are different sections of the school which I found pretty neat. They have a yellow, blue, dark blue, black and teal corner. Right when we finished, at the end, everything looked so crisp and clean.”

Lavallee says he going to stick with RAP through school and save as much money as he can to eventually pursue his passion for music through audio engineering.
