All Albertans can now apply online for AISH and Income Support

Albertans can now apply online for Income Support and Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH).

The UCP government shared Wednesday the function is now available to all in the province after it was piloted with several organizations in the bigger cities.

“This new easy-to-use system brings these important programs into the technological world we live in. Not only will Albertans have easy access to apply for important supports, but the new systems will also free up staff so they have more time to help clients,” says Jason Luan, Minister of Community and Social Services.

“This includes providing people with support to find work and maintain employment. By collaborating and working together with our community partners, we are improving systems and making it easier for vulnerable people to access the supports they need.”

If one doesn’t have computer access, they can use one at Alberta Supports Centres, or through community agencies and public libraries, a release states. In-person services can still be requested through the Alberta Supports Contact Centre or at any local Alberta Supports office.

“The UCP may pat themselves on the back for reducing red tape for people who have access to computers and broadband, but they are ignoring the real needs of disabled and low-income Albertans,” says Marie Renaud, NDP MLA and Critic for Community and Social Services. “The UCP has cut tens of millions from Social Services and are pointing to red tape reduction to distract from years of growing poverty and risk.”

Renaud says the UCP should also be indexing AISH and Income Support benefits immediately, so that it is line with inflation.

About 12,000 applications for AISH are made in Alberta annually.

Last year, an average of 8,900 applications for Income Support were submitted each month.
