Community Futures hosting Lemonade Day to help youth learn business

Jun 16, 2022 | 1:47 PM

Community Futures is raising money and educating kids about running their own business on Saturday with Lemonade Day.

Lemonade Day is designed to teach kids a more elaborate side of business, as they are required to pay back investors after the day, learn budgeting skills, and execute a business plan.

Sarah Bateman, Community Futures Business Development Officer, says this isn’t your normal kid’s lemonade stand but one that follows a program.

“It’s a program we run every year where we work through a workbook with the kids and teach them how to make a basic business plan and run it just like a business so they get that experience.”

“We teach them that they have to get a parent or business partner to help them set up their business and then they have to do things like budgeting and then do things like pay back an investor,” says Bateman.

Bateman says all proceeds of Lemonade Day do go back to the children but they are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some, with many kids donating portions of their funds to charity. The day also teaches kids about financial literacy and being a positive member of their community.

Bateman said with all the extra pieces to their program, it really supplies these kids with a good foundation from a young age.

” Well this way really teaches them the basics to business and they’re learning things like marketing, budgeting just skills they might not learn at a young age otherwise.”

Twenty-one stands are expected to be in Grande Prairie, along with one in Clairmont, one in Beaverlodge, and two in Wembly.

Bateman says Community Futures will be out at the Bed Shop Saturday with a list of stand locations. Those locations are also listed on their Facebook page here.
