Crops look good so far says GGC chair

Crops are looking good so far, according to the Grain Growers of Canada chair.

Valhalla farmer Andre Harpe says after a late start to seeding, the seed went into the ground “extremely fast.”

“I was talking to some of the neighbours and some of the people I know (and) there were some extremely long days. I think everybody knew (that) it had to get in and so I think there was an extreme push to get it in.”

“Over a ten-day period, a lot of the crop went in, which it had to.”

Harpe says as far as he knows, everybody is finished seeding although some fields that were too wet may have gone unseeded.

“Some of the crop plantings probably changed and did change. A little more barley might have gotten seeded than some of the later varieties of canola. I do know some wheat acres changed out.”

“The crop plans got changed a bit but, for the most part, everything got done.”

Harpe says he was “extremely thankful” for the rain that fell over the last few days.

“Not that we were dry, but you could tell the moisture table was starting to go down. We’ve had around an inch-and-a-half of rain these past few days. It soaked in very, very nicely.”

“It was at an opportune time. It was getting time for it to come. We’ve got some hot weather in the forecast, so it’s just what we need.”

Harpe says some canola farmers are spraying their fields for flea beetles but adds things aren’t too bad so far when it comes to crop diseases in the Grande Prairie region.
