A large donation has been made to the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters by IODE Alberta.

The $100,000 is meant to help continue the delivery of training to frontline shelter workers to support children involved in domestic violence, covering topics such as; adverse childhood experiences, impacts of toxic stress and resilience providing practical tools to use with children.

Lisa Waston, the Executive Director of Odyessy House in Grande Prairie says they received the specialized training in the last few months.

“It’s important because it unique training that’s focused on trauma informed care that really helps us to understand the early brain development and our interactions with that are accessing our services. So it really puts us in a place to set kids up for success and healing from witnessing domestic violence… or being a part of it.” Watson says.

The Healing Brain: Supporting Children from Trauma to Resilience program was developed by the ACWS and can now be delivered virtually on their new platform LMS as well as in person.

Watson says ACWS has always done a great job at providing training at a low or no cost to shelters.

“For those that might be in smaller communities or shelters that can’t maintain a budget for travel, it will be acceptable for those agencies now,” she said about the new virtual delivery of the curriculum.

The donation from IODE Alberta is one of the largest charitable gifts in the ACWS’s 39-year-history.
