Celebrating Indigenous Culture in Muskoseepi Park Sunday

Jun 24, 2022 | 3:32 PM

A mix of Indigenous and other cultures will be celebrated this Sunday in Grande Prairie.

The Seven Sacred Teaching Awards, Grade 12 recognitions, teepees, traditional Indigenous dancers and singers, jigging and fiddling contests are some of the many attractions in Muskoseepi Park for Celebrating Indigenous Culture: “Honouring All My Relations” will have.

The event is being hosted by The Native Counselling Services of Alberta with support from other local businesses.

President of Saltmedia, an Aboriginal Business in Grande Prairie and volunteer for the event Angie Saltman says they will also be honouring Ukrainian heritage.

“Ukrainian and Indigenous people have lived side-by-side for many generations, and we’re always working together in our small communities to support each other historically and still today,” she says.

The event will be accepting donations to send over to those in Ukraine through “Ukrainian Brothers and Sisters”.

“For myself, I’m Metis. I’m Ukrainian and Scottish Metis, there’s a lot of shared heritage and there’s a lot of Ukrainian Metis people as well.”

This year’s theme is “Honouring All My Relations”, which Saltman says is a great opportunity for reconciliation.

“Something that’s really important to know, is that celebrating Indigenous Peoples Month or Day is not just for Indigenous people. We really want everybody to come and participate.”

“I think there’s been an awakening in the world, realizing Canada’s history and working towards truth and reconciliation is an important step for all of us to do. So business communities, individuals, Indigenous people; we’re all ready to work together to build a better future for all of us,” she says.

The event starts at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 in Muskoseepi Park, admission is free.
