Ribfest returns in-person this weekend for meat-eating enthusiasts

Grande Prairie’s four Rotary clubs are combining forces this weekend to stage the return of Ribfest.

Rotary Club of Grande Prairie After 5 Club President Dale Tiedemann says It is the first walk-up version of Ribfest since 2019.

“We tried a couple of different models over the last two years just to keep the momentum going. We did a drive-thru and that type of thing and it worked really well. But we are super excited to be back in person and be able to connect with one another.”

Tiedemann adds they are excited to have the rib trucks and other local food vendors set up in a new location this year at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

“We will be on the east parking lot, as well as on the Helen A. Rice plaza. So that whole area will be Rib Festival activities, including an entertainment stage this year. We have some great, local food trucks on-site as well as the traditional ribbers that we see year after year, and we have a couple of new ones as well.”

With the Grande Prairie International Street Performers Festival also taking place at the same time just a block away on 100th avenue, Tiedemann thinks being outside of Bonnett’s Energy Centre will give their event a lot of great exposure.

“People that come over to the Street Performers Festival can definitely pop over for a bit to eat after the performances, or vice versa they can come for a bite to eat and then go check out the Street Performers.”

“And then Friday and Saturday night also, we have live entertainment at the Bonnett’s Energy Centre as part of Ribfest as well.”

Tiedemann says proceeds from the weekend go towards several initiatives supported by the four local Rotary clubs.

“We support a lot of really great local initiatives, and then some international projects as well. So we are really excited to be able to utilize the money that we earn through Ribfest to put back into the community and into the global community as well.”

Ribfest goes from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
