Jul 31, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The provincial government has granted $2 million in funding for the proposed Central Peace Regional Water Treatment Plant in Saddle Hills County.

Through the Water for Life program, 90 per-cent of the costs for the phase of the project are now covered.

The Central Peace G5 Municipalities including Birch Hills County, the MD of Spirit River, Saddle Hills County, the Town of Spirit River, and the Village of Rycroft have all partnered in this effort.

The water treatment plant is the next phase. The current phase is in progress, with a new water supply intake and lift station on the Peace River by the Dunvegan Bridge as well as around 36 kilometers of new raw water pipeline to the Spirit River and Rycroft reservoirs.

The entire project costs $40 million and is being supported by the federal and provincial governments as well as Saddle Hills County.

There are currently seven water treatment plants in the Central Peace G5 region. The water supply project is aiming to bring a reliable, safe, and expanded water treatment system to the vast area now and in the future.

Saddle Hills County is hosting an Open House for the Central Peace Regional Water Supply project on Thursday, August 18, 2022, from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. at the Spirit River Centennial Hall.

There will be information on the project, as well as opportunities to ask questions and voice concerns. Everyone is welcome to attend, with snacks and drinks provided.
