County of Grande Prairie looking to widen part of Resources Road

Aug 5, 2022 | 7:45 PM

The County of Grande Prairie is looking at widening part of Resources Road.

County Director of Public Works Ryan Konowalyk says this is for the part from the Dunes access to the old gravel pit where Nauticol is looking at building a methanol plant.

“The improvements would include a future intersection improvement to Nauticol should that development move ahead.”

“A third lane, basically coming north – up towards the Dunes and improvements to the bridge structure that goes over Resources Road, as well as an intersection improvement at the Dunes access.”

He adds the province had offered some grant money under its road program for this work.

“Basically, for roads that get used by industry. Of course, there is more than Nauticol down there. There’s International Paper and Weyerhaeuser and such. There is a private gravel source located down further.”

Konowalyk says industrial use plus the province providing grant money led to the project being considered.

“The grant money would not cover it all. They do have a formula that lays out what is eligible for the grant funding and what isn’t so there are portions of the project that wouldn’t be (covered).”

“The grant funding would be applicable based on eligibility that the province deems so no, the grant funding doesn’t cover it all.”

County council has given first reading to a borrowing bylaw with second and third reading planned for a future meeting.

Konowalyk says they also hope industry will pay for some of the work.

He adds the hope is some of the bridge work starts next year with the road work to follow.
