AFSC official says some farms hit twice by hail

Aug 7, 2022 | 8:00 AM

An official with the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation says some Peace Region farms were hit by hail twice over the August long weekend.

AFSC Claims Adjusting manager George Geibert says some of the storms that weekend overlapped.

He adds there were some reports of hail near La Glace.

“Closer to (Grande Prairie), those storms were spotty but definitely an active area.”

“Worsley down to Hines Creek has been reporting some hail. East of Fairview in the Bluesky (area). Tangent and Eaglesham, it sounds like that area was hit particularly hard.”

Geibert says there were also reports of hail around Guy and the storms were spotty in some areas but “quite severe” in others.

He adds clients have 14 days to report hail loss.

“We’re still tallying the claim numbers and we’re still determining where the worst damage is.”

Geibert recommends they take their time and have a good look at their fields.

“Determine where they have hail loss and report those to their branch offices.”

“We do have some of our adjusters starting to get into the area just to determine what’s what and what type of damage we are looking at.”

Geibert says it usually takes another couple of weeks to process claims depending on how many come in. He hopes they can have them done by the end of the month.

He also says hail damage reports have also been coming in from the Red Deer-Ponoka area east to the Saskatchewan boundary and from around Calgary.
