Crime stats show significant increase June/July this year to 2021

Aug 10, 2022 | 3:15 PM

The Grande Prairie RCMP released their latest newsletter and shocking numbers were revealed in it.

Crime statistics compared with June and July in 2021 to this year, are drastically different in both the City and County.

Offence types like break and enters, theft of motor vehicles and from motor vehicles were well over the amount recorded last year during the same period.

In the City:

  • Break and Enter – 78 in 2022, 47 in 2021
  • Theft of Motor Vehicle – 75 in 2022, 26 in 2021
  • Theft from Motor Vehicle – 111 in 2022, 39 in 2021
  • Possession of Stolen Property – 39 in 2022, 38 in 2021

In the County:

  • Break and Enter – 32 in 2022 vs.17 in 2021
  • Theft of Motor Vehicle – 34 in 2022 vs. 14 in 2021
  • Theft from Motor Vehicle – 11 in 2022 vs. 5 in 2021
  • Possession of Stolen Property – 20 in 2022 vs. 6 in 2021

Constable Lindsay McNab with the Grande Prairie RCMP says the statistics help police see where the trends are going.

“We like to use them to see where we should be focusing our attention to.”

“There’s nothing specific that we can point a finger at to say that’s the reason for the increase, obviously if there was something we could attribute it to we would fix the problem so we didn’t have that increase,” she says.

Approximately 5324 police calls for service in the City were attended to in the June and July time period this year, compared to 4768 in 2021… an increase of over 550.

In the County, there was a decrease in calls in the same time frame – 1045 in 2022 and 1084 in 2021.

“Proactive patrols are a priority for us, knowing what we should be focusing more on definitely helps us.”

In the Grande Prairie RCMP newsletter, it does advise the crime statistics given are raw and do not represent a final or official statistic at this time.
