Fairview RCMP warn of paving scams

Aug 17, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Fairview RCMP have sent out a warning about paving company scams.

They say they have had what they call “a number of complaints.”

Police say the scammers claim to be pavers, offer an inexpensive rate, then do poor quality work after being paid upfront.

Mounties say tips to avoid scams include the following:

1) Ask for names or references of previous customers

2) Research the company through the Better Business Bureau in Alberta, the Consumer Investigations Unit, local Crime Watch or on social media

3) Obtain a written quote that includes the full business name, address, phone number, GST number, as well as provincial and municipal license numbers, if applicable.

4) Quotes should specify the quantity and quality of materials being offered. Be skeptical if contractors decline to provide this information

5) Seek estimates from reputable companies to compare costs

6) Do not agree to a contract if you feel pressured or if the contractor refuses to take “no” for an answer.

7) Be leery of unsolicited offers; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

Anyone who has fallen victim to this scam can contact the Fairview RCMP Detachment at 780-835-2211, or their local police.

Anyone who wants to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
