County BSN to host job fair on September 15th

Evergreen Park’s Tara Centre will play host to a job fair next month, hosted by the County of Grande Prairie Business Support Network.

The event will take place on September 15th from noon to 8 pm.

Community Futures Grande Prairie and Region Executive Director Holly Sorgen says the business community in the County has asked for an event like this to be held.

“We hear of a lot of private sector companies that are hosting their own job fairs. Maybe they are renting a room somewhere and welcoming people to come and apply and they can interview onsite. But a lot of companies do not have the wherewithal to be able to do that. And so what we wanted to do was accommodate them and have an opportunity for those employers to come and have a booth at a fairly economical rate, and have the ability to just access a diverse employee stream.”

Sorgen says the response to the job fair so far has been positive.

“So far we have 12 businesses that are confirmed that have booths. And that is pretty good for Grande Prairie given that we are a fairly short-notice society. At the last job fair, we had 40 booths, so we anticipate that we will probably have that number if not more this year.”

The job fair is hosted by the County of Grande Prairie Business Support Network, a collaborative effort that includes the County and several other local partners.

One of those partners is Sorgen’s organization, Community Futires Grande Prairie and Region.

“A number of partners got together with the County of Grande Prairie (a few years ago) after some significant work had been done around business visitations in the County. And what we were hearing when we were talking with those businesses was that the businesses needed additional support in areas like workforce development, job retention, and all of that stuff. ”

“We looked throughout the province for models that might work for this region. And we found that the Business Support Network, which is supported in a number of different ways in other communities, seemed to be that vehicle that we could use.”
