High interest in composting workshop put on by County

Aug 24, 2022 | 7:03 AM

On Saturday, August 27, at the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management the County of Grande Prairie is hosting a hands-on workshop to learn about composting.

Out to Lunch Farmstead’s Rebekah Keyes, a very experienced local composter, will be teaching 30 participants the basics of composting; from small to large scale households and agriculturally, the do’s and don’ts and other tips and tricks.

Technical Services Manager with the County, Jennifer Besinger says there was a large interest in this first-ever composting information workshop.

“Composting is a very beneficial thing for both the waste cycle and also the generation of beneficial earth. It really is a full cycle type activity.”

“Of course it reduces waste and it also puts good nutrition back into the soil for growing,” she says.

Besinger notes the spaces to attend the workshop put on by the County were filled before the deadline to register.

“There will be demonstrations of how to use temperature probes because composting decomposition is about temperature, you don’t need a thermometer but it’s in interesting to know how it decomposes and what it does.”

What types of waste can be composted, ratios, mixing and moisture level will also be discussed.

The County is providing participants with composting pails following the workshop to start practicing their new knowledge at home.
