The first annual ‘Experience Grande Prairie’ taking over City Centre

Aug 26, 2022 | 8:31 AM

The first annual ‘Experience Grande Prairie’ event starts Friday, August 26, in City Centre.

An event created by the City of Grande Prairie to show off new or newly constructed areas around the City and get people out of their homes and together, once again.

Mayor, Jackie Clayton says City Council wanted to create an event to get people back out in the City of Grande Prairie together, while also helping local businesses showcase their amazing shops and goods.

” We decided (City Council) to merge a new local event with an old event that was Municipal World, so we’re merging Municipal world with this new awesome event and it’s super exciting, this year being able to celebrate in our City Centre with the fourth phase of construction finally done, but it’s so much more than that its a way to come out on a Friday night with some friends.”

Clayton says both events will carry a different theme with Friday being more for adults and Saturday being more family-friendly, both days will have activities to reflect that.

Friday’s event will be on 101 Avenue and 101 Street and will feature:

  • Live entertainment featuring Trooper (from 8:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and Who Made Who (from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.)
  • Top 40’s hits playing from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
  • Beer gardens
  • Art walk showcasing historical photos of downtown
  • Experience Downtown Passport
  • Scavenger Hunt

Saturday’s events will be at 100 Avenue and 101 Street and will feature:

  • Live entertainment featuring the Confusionaires (3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.), Travis Fowler Band (1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.), and Mandee Rae (12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.)
  • Experience Downtown Passport
  • Art walk showcasing historical photos of downtown
  • Wagon rides
  • Kids zone with bouncy castles
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Roaming entertainment
  • Municipal showcase

Clayton added even though Friday and Saturday have different themes, the ‘Experience Downtown Passport’ contest and Art walk will stay for the whole weekend and are free to attend.

With the ‘Experience Downtown Passport’ contest, Residents can get a passport and receive stamps from different businesses around the City Centre, after collecting five stamps you can redeem them at a City Centre booth and be entered to win a prize.

“That was actually a City Centre initiative, they wanted to be a part of this event, no better way for them to get engaged to include their stores and merchants, they have a new gift card program they were able to incorporate into the same time as this event, so it’s really their part of the event.” Said Clayton.

‘Experience Grande Prairie’ will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, August 26, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.
