Okhifoh on ballot for the 2022 By-Election

Solomon Okhifoh, who ran in the last municipal election, will run again in this year’s by-election.

Okhifoh says that he wants to reduce crime and homelessness, keep the cost of living down, and create a diverse and tight-knit community.

He believes he knows exactly how to do so.

“And so what I did (after the last election) was to go and educate myself on how to handle these issues, so that’s where I went and took a course on local government administration and that’s where I was able to find out, some of these things we’re talking about are not the responsibility of the local government.”

Okhifoh says learning these things is going to help him reduce petty crime and homelessness, not only by promoting and pushing services on crime protection but by putting pressure on bigger governments who may have forgotten about Grande Prairie over the years.

” They are not technically a ‘municipal headache’ (homeless people). They are supposed to be the provincial and federal governments, but over time they have been offloaded into municipalities. I want to work with the rest of the council to put pressure on the provincial and federal government, to take care of their own business.”

He says keeping the people who reside in Grande Prairie is important to him, and reducing crime and homelessness, as well as having better spending when it comes to construction and snow removal, will all play a factor in that.

One other factor he believes will affect everyone’s quality of life is bringing a sense of community back to GP.

” I want an integrated community, I want people to be able to relate to each other, irrespective of your colour, religion, creed, or whatsoever. In my neighborhood, I’m the type of person that says let’s come together, throw something on the barbecue, have a pop, that’s the kind of human being I am.”

Okhifoh says that he will always be the type of person to be ‘hands-on’, already being the vice president of the Nigerian Association, and sitting on a number of city boards and committees.

He adds, “if the people of Grande Prairie want a councilor that has the ability to confront, and the humility to serve the people, they should vote for Solomon Okhifoh”
