Local politicians from the Peace at the Alberta Municipalities Convention

Sep 21, 2022 | 2:54 PM

Local politicians from around the Peace are in Calgary this week for the 2022 Alberta Municipalities convention.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says this is a chance for municipal leaders to get together to learn and share successes.

“We’re happy to talk about some of our wins in our community. We talk about the Mobile Outreach Team. Many municipalities are interested in that program that really creates street-level engagement and solutions for people that need it.”

“It supports businesses. It supports community (and a) collaborative approach with RCMP and the street-engaged.”

Clayton says something else they would like to talk about is the activity/reception centre in the Smith subdivision, a recreation facility that can become a reception centre during an emergency.

Clayton calls this a good chance for local politicians to learn.

That includes a session on how local politicians can better engage with their communities and meetings with some provincial cabinet ministers.

“We will meet with (Health) Minister (Jason) Copping in regard to the health scenario in our region and we’ll meet with (Justice) Minister (Tyler) Shandro and Minister (Ric) McIver, the Minister of Municipal Affairs.”

“We’ll also meet with Minister (Nate) Horner to talk about agriculture and forestry and rural economic development.”

Horner is Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

Clayton says while health care is a priority, there are other things to talk about.

“We want to talk about the province supporting us in the municipal exploration of policing and what that looks like.”

“We’ve talked at a high level with Alberta Municipalities (about) the provincial police force, but we’ll also talk at a local level… what does policing mean at a local level?”

All members of Grande Prairie city council, except Councillor Gladys Blackmore are attending.

The convention runs through Friday, September 21.
