Peace Curling Tour opens season with Grande Prairie Cash Speil in October

Sep 25, 2022 | 8:45 AM

The Peace Curling Tour returns this year, with the season starting off October 28 in Grande Prairie.

The Tour will feature four stops around the Peace Region with the tournament final scheduled for Sexsmith in the new year.

Tournament events:

  • October 28 to 30 – Grande Prairie Cash Spiel
  • November 25 to 27 – Dawson Creek Cash Spiel
  • January 13 to 15 – Slave Lake Cash Spiel
  • February 24 to 26 – Peace River Cash Spiel
  • March (dates have yet to be finalized) – Sexsmith Tour Championship

Colin Griffith, Executive Director of the Grande Prairie Curling Club says the Peace Curling Tour is very unique, with it not being uncommon to see a group of senior women beating a group of teenage boys.

“We have what’s called; the Competitive division and that’s for teams that are probably Men’s or Women’s teams, highly competitive mixed teams. They’re seniors teams that are competitive, they choose (the teams that sign up) where they want to play but that’s the highest level, that’s the most skilled division.”

Griffith says there are four divisions in total for teams to play in: Competitive, Challenge, Junior, and a new one they just started in 2019 – Special Olympics.

“We have just started, started just before the pandemic, a Special Olympics division and were reinvigorating that for this year, and we have three Special Olympics teams.”

He adds opening this tour up to include more people will only help curling in the Peace grow more.

Griffith says curling will also grow more in the Peace by offering this tour on a more local scale, it’s great for everyone in the Peace region, from high-level curlers trying to move up in the ranks to people just doing it as an activity, it includes and brings everyone together.

“Because it’s local you see the clubs don’t have to travel to Edmonton or Calgary to rehearse and practice and because there are fourteen different classifications of competition that lead to national play-downs, and so there’s still a segment of the community that likes to participate in those events.”

He adds including people that are serious about curling and people who do it for fun only helps others get better and create a sense of community and pride around the sport in the area by having all teams and players familiar with each other, regardless of their skill level.

There will be six teams in the Competitive and Challenge division, and four in the Junior division that will qualify for the Tournament Championship in Sexsmith.
