Alberta producers vote heavily in favour of amalgamated commission

Nov 2, 2022 | 1:05 PM

Producers in the province have voted heavily in favor of amalgamating the Alberta Wheat Commission and Alberta Barley.

The two plebiscites saw 89 per cent of wheat farmers and 88 per cent of barley farmers in support of forming one commission.

Over the entire month of October, 1,569 votes were cast online or over the phone; 6.1 per cent of the eligible voters for the plebiscites.

The results are preliminary for the next two weeks and barley and wheat farmers can expect an update on the process in regional meetings happening this month and AGMs in December and January.

AWC Chair and Sexsmith producer Greg Sears said in a news release: “This process has been five years in the making, complete with striking of a sub-committee comprised of both wheat and barley farmers, formal consultations with farmer stakeholders, and culminating with two plebiscites.”

“Both commissions have done their due diligence to ensure this is the right direction for our members and are eager to engage farmers on the path forward,” said Sears.
