Grande Prairie Airport hosting open house Thursday

Dec 14, 2022 | 1:33 PM

The Grande Prairie Airport will play host to an open house on Thursday, December 15.

CEO Brian Grant says it will allow the public to review a new 20-year master plan for the airport.

“In 2018 we did a new version. But COVID and the recovery has thrown everything out of sequence in our recovery so much that we elected to do a new one and reset the schedule for capital improvements and expansion.”

Grant adds the open house will be highlighted by a presentation of the draft master plan.

“And then some drawings that are open and available to see, on our plans that we see now looking forward in recovery and beyond. (The open house) was postponed once because of shortages of staff at the consultant level, in order to get some of the financial projections in place.”

Grant says the main focus of the master plan is to look at infrastructure and long-term planning of what the airport will look like.

“The phases, what we may do to the terminal building to improve amenities, increase parking, and that kind of stuff. So, the intent of the open house is to certainly have the public come in, have a good look around, see what the airport may look like 10, 15, 20 years out, and give us some ideas of things that they see there that they like or do not like.”

Grant adds one of the highlights of the master plan is the expansion of the terminal building’s footprint.

“(That would) include a customs services area for international flights. Our plans to increase the check-in areas, our plans to increase parking and the roadway systems. Those are going to be the big ones.”

Grant says this is the public’s opportunity to come see what the airport will look like in the medium and long term.

The open house goes from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday night in the second-floor boardroom in the airport terminal.
