Three First Nation communities in northwestern Alberta receive federal funding for food security projects

Dec 16, 2022 | 1:38 PM

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has announced support for up to 79 new projects across Canada that promote food security in Indigenous, remote, and Northern communities through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund in its fourth phase.

Up to $19.5 million is being invested, with 56 of the projects announced on Friday being Indigenous-led, totaling up to $15.1 million.

Three community-led projects in northwestern Alberta have been approved for funding, which are all located on First Nations.

$1,026,207 is being split between:

  • The Whitefish Lake First Nation/Atikameg is receiving $202,005 to purchase a container hydroponic grow system.
  • Dene Tha’ First Nation/Chateh, northwest of High Level is receiving $500,000 to go towards the purchase of a composting unit, all-season greenhouse with aquaponics and processing structure, and cold storage units.
  • Little Red River Cree Nation/John D’or Prairie is receiving $324,202 for purchasing a hydroponic garden and processing unit.

The federal government says they’re committed to working with local organizations to provide communities with access to tools that help them meet the immediate and growing needs of people experiencing food insecurity in the country.
