Provincial government seeking input on Alberta judges’ compensation

Alberta’s 2021 judicial compensation commission is inviting public submissions on compensation levels for Alberta judges.

Provincial officials say an independent judicial compensation commission was established in 2021 under Alberta’s Judicature Act to review and recommend the appropriate level of compensation for Alberta provincial court judges and Court of King’s Bench applications judges for the period of April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2025.

The commission is holding a public hearing Feb. 1-3 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Edmonton Law Courts building at 1A Sir Winston Churchill Square.

Written submissions will be accepted until Jan. 16, by email to ruth.fast@gov.ab.ca.

• The Supreme Court of Canada has imposed a constitutional obligation on provincial governments to use an independent commission process to set the compensation for judicial officers, including judges and applications judges.
• The judicial compensation commission reviews and recommends changes in compensation every four years. This includes salary rates, design and level of pension benefits, and types and kinds of benefits and allowances.
• Public submissions to the commission should include name, mailing address, email address and telephone number.
• The commission may require a person who has filed written submissions to attend the hearing and respond to questions.
• The commission may permit oral submissions during the three-day hearing. Written submissions should include whether the submitter wishes to make an oral
