Wapiti Off-Road Association hosts “Studs On Ice” at Clairmont Lake

Jan 19, 2023 | 1:23 PM

Clairmont Lake will be ground zero for an ice racing event on Sunday, thanks to the Wapiti Off-Road Association.

The Studs on Ice series will have three race classes: ATVs, Dirt Bikes, and Side by Sides racing on a five to eight kilometre GP-style track, consisting of left and right turns along with straightaways.

Association board member and ATV racer Larry Prince, says “Basically we build a track on a frozen lake, and then we go out and race on them for about 45 minutes a turn and we do that twice a day kind of thing, try and collect points and see who can gather the bragging rights by the end of the season.”

Prince says racers will need to follow some rules.

“We require you to have a sheet of plywood, just so if your machine is leaking any oils or anything like that we don’t contaminate the ice. Each pit is supposed to have a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit, that kind of thing.”

“Each unit should have a tethered kill switch, so if the rider falls off the machine the engine will die instead of just ghost riding. Proper riding apparel is required, and for the bikes, have race guards. The tires will all the studs in them are like a giant chainsaw.”

Anyone wanting to race can register when they arrive. They must pay a fee for each class they want to race in, and buy a $20 Wapiti Off-Road membership.

Prince adds for the membership fee, it’s less about the money and more about supporting their association so they can continue to serve the community.

“The race fee is $60 per day. That’s just the race fee, and then we do ask to buy a Wapiti Off-Road membership. It supports the club and gives us numbers to do what Wapiti Off-Road Association does.

“We can combat and educate about what you should do when your out operating an ATV, Side by Side, or a Dirt Bike.”

There will also be activities for the whole family, not just the racers. There will be a skating loop for families along with a scavenger hunt for the kids.
