Strong job creation numbers, but mixed results for provincial and federal unemployment rates

Feb 10, 2023 | 2:01 PM

Despite the creation of 20,600 new jobs in January, Alberta’s unemployment rate rose slightly in the first month of the year.

It sits at 6 per cent, compared to 5.8 per cent in December.

The provincial government says the majority of the job growth was in the private and services-producing sectors, including wholesale and retail trade, as well as professional scientific and technical services.

Regional numbers, including those for the economic region that includes Grande Prairie and the Peace Region, were not available.

Nationally, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.0 per cent, as the economy added 150,000 new jobs, a figure that surpassed economists’ projections.

Since September, the Canadian economy has added 326-thousand jobs, despite forecasts that higher interest rates would slow the economy down significantly and weigh on employment
