AHS is raising awareness for Sexual and Reproductive Health Week

Feb 15, 2023 | 11:07 AM

Sexual and Reproductive Health Week runs until Friday, and Alberta Health Services wants to take the time to raise awareness and encourage residents to educate themselves and their youth about sexual and reproductive health.

AHS wants to encourage all Albertans to visit their Alberta Health Page to navigate sexual health services offered around the province, including sexual health education, and sexual assault response teams.

The health authority adds learning about sexual and reproductive health can help create safer sexual behaviors, increase condom use, which lowers the risk of unintended pregnancy, improve ideas about consent, healthy relationships, sexual health care, and reduce sexual and gender-based violence.

Having conversations and raising awareness for safe sex and reproductive practices, comes during a time when Alberta is seeing an increase in STI’s; seeing Gonorrhea, HIV, and Syphilis all increase since 2020. (according to the provincial government’s 2021 annual report)

Parents and teachers can also work together to help reduce stigma’s regarding sexual and reproductive health, by clicking here, for lesson plans, evidence-based resources, and tools to support and continue conversations with children or youth.

AHS believes taking care of sexual and reproductive health is fundamental to our well-being, quality of life, and relationships.
