Weekend local hockey recap

The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings and Fort St John Huskies have both opened their respective NWJHL semi-final series with 2-0 leads.

The Wheat Kings beat the Sexsmith Vipers 6-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Sunday and will host the Vipers Monday night (March 6th) at 8 pm at Crosslink County Sportsplex.

The Huskies are facing the Dawson Creek Kodiaks and picked up wins of 8-1 and 5-1 to start that series. Game three is Wednesday night in Fort St John.

AJHL

The Grande Prairie Storm wrapped up their regular season by going 2-and-1 on a road trip through Eastern Alberta.

After falling 3-1 in Bonnyville on Friday, the Storm swept a doubleheader in Lloydminster by scores of 6-5 and 5-3.

The Storm will face Whitecourt in the opening round of the playoffs, with Game 1 set for Friday night in Whitecourt.

NPHL

The Falher Pirates have advanced to the North Peace Hockey League final after blanking the Manning Comets 3-0 on Friday night to sweep the East Final in four straight.

They now wait for the West Final to wrap up, with the Dawson Creek Canucks holding a 3-2 lead in that series over the Spirit River Rangers.

For the fourth straight time in the series, overtime was needed to determine a winner on Saturday night, with the Canucks prevailing 4-3 in double overtime to take their first lead in the series.

Game 6 is Tuesday night at Maclean Recreation Complex in Spirit River at 8:30.
