City Council approves Police Commission Bylaw

Mar 21, 2023 | 6:00 AM

City Council approved Bylaw C-1455, which is the Police Commission Bylaw, during Monday’s regular city council meeting.

The Police Commission Bylaw was carried unanimously as council described it as the bones of the municipal police force.

The city says this bylaw stands as more of a “place-holder bylaw” as council must still deliberate and create all the policies and bylaws that go into it, along with choosing a commission.,

There will also be mandatory policies and bylaws in place that will come from Alberta’s Provincial Police Act.

Other highlights that took place at Monday’s meeting include extending transit hours and a delegation that included Veteran’s Memorial Garden spokeswoman Renee Charbonneau.

Council voted on extending the hours of operations for transit to enhance mobility across the city, with it now operating from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. The city says it anticipates having this in place by mid-June although a firm date has not been set.

Charbonneau asked for council’s support in creating an event centered around the Battle of Ortona that took place in Italy 80 years ago.

This event would see the city celebrate the soldier’s brave sacrifices by hosting a vintage car show, a 1940’s style dance and even partnering with the City of Ortona, to share in the celebration.

The estimated cost associated with a festival like this was set at roughly $17,000 by Charbonneau, but she will bring in a final figure for council in the coming weeks.

The next scheduled regular City Council meeting is set for April 3.
