Alberta’s population on the rise

Mar 23, 2023 | 2:08 PM

It was down from the near-record set in the third quarter, but interprovincial migration to Alberta remained high over the last three months of 2022.

That according to ATB Economics, Rob Roach. He says on a net basis, Alberta gained 11,534 residents from other parts of Canada in the fourth quarter compared to 19,285 in the third quarter.

Roach says this was the sixth quarter in a row that Alberta gained population from other parts of the country for a total increase of 52,479 residents over this period from interprovincial migration.

Roach says five provinces posted gains from interprovincial migration in the fourth quarter with Alberta adding the most residents. Nova Scotia experienced the second-largest net inflow at +1,025.

Roach notes Ontario was the main source of residents moving to Alberta in the fourth quarter with 4,831 more Ontario residents moving to Alberta than vice versa.

British Columbia was the second largest source with 3,591 more people moving from B.C. to Alberta than the other way around.

Roach says a relatively stronger economic performance in Alberta is expected to maintain the positive inflow of interprovincial migrants into the province in 2023.

Meantime, President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance Travis Toews and Minister of Jobs, Economy and Northern Development Brian Jean issued the following statement on Alberta’s population growth in the fourth quarter of 2022-2023:

“New population estimates show that Alberta continues to attract people from across Canada and around the world. Alberta’s allure is not hard to see.

“Our lower cost of living, affordable housing, abundant jobs, higher earnings and lower taxes are attracting newcomers from all over the country and abroad. Combined with our commitment to fiscal responsibility, job creation and investment attraction, we know that Alberta will remain the economic engine of Canada,” said Travis Toews, President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance.

“Alberta is calling – and many are answering the call. Our province continues to welcome people to experience the Renewed Alberta Advantage – being part of a highly skilled workforce with an affordable, exceptional lifestyle. More than 45,000 people moved to Alberta from other parts of Canada in 2022. Half of our net interprovincial migration occurred after the launch of the Alberta is Calling campaign in August.

“More than 4.6 million people now call Alberta home. Thanks to Alberta’s growing population, employers are making progress towards filling vacant full-time positions as workers migrate to Alberta to find good-paying jobs with higher wages than the rest of the country,” added Brian Jean, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Northern Development.
