One project, based in the Peace, is among 39 new research ideas in agriculture getting funding from the Agriculture Funding Consortium.

Northwestern Polytechnic is getting $174,944 from this group to look at using a process called “pollen DNA metabarcoding” to boost the value of honey and the health of pollinators in cropping landscapes.

‘Metabarcoding’ is used to identify different species of DNA from a mixed sample.

The total project cost is $279,848.

NAIT, the Universities of Alberta and Calgary, as well as the university, college, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research station in Lethbridge, are also getting funding for various projects.

Other research ideas being funded include developing a vaccine against the bacteria that causes for bovine respiratory disease, work on herbicides and fertilizer for wheat, genetic research on canola and pulse crops, and regional variety trials.

A complete list can be found here.

This consortium is made up of 18 commodity groups from across the prairies, most of which are based in Alberta. That includes the Alberta Wheat, Barley, Canola Producers, Beekeepers, and Pulse Growers Commissions, along with Alberta Beef Producers.
