Point in Time Count on Homelessness report findings released

Mar 29, 2023 | 9:23 PM

The city has released results of its 2022 Point in Time Count on homelessness.

Conducted over two days in late September of last year, the count observed at least 328 individuals who were experiencing homelessness within the community.

Among the results of the count, 75 per cent said they were experiencing chronic homelessness meaning they had been homeless for 180 days or more over the previous year, while a further 11 per cent were described as hidden homeless – meaning they were staying with family or friends.

Of those surveyed, 61 per cent were Indigenous, 5 per cent were veterans, and the largest age group experiencing homelessness were people aged 25-44, which made up 65 per cent of those surveyed.

51 per cent of those surveyed indicated they had mental health issues, while 65 per cent reported two or ore health challenges.

The count also showed that 124 of the people surveyed visited an emergency shelter on the day of the count, while 43 people were counted at domestic violence shelters.

Full details of the count can be found on the city’s website.

Besides being used to help guide the City’s 2021-2023 Homelessness strategy, some results from the count will also be used by Alberta’s 7 Cities Network on Housing and Homelessness towards broader policy development, as well as creating a stronger local, provincial, and national approach to ending homelessness.
