Prep. work to demolish Comp and Leisure Centre expected to start this month

Apr 6, 2023 | 12:00 PM

Preparation work for the demolition of the old Comp high school and Leisure Centre is expected to start this month.

Sherwood Park-based AMAN Builders was awarded the tender for the project.

Grande Prairie Public School Division Superintendent Sandy McDonald says it will take several months to finish.

“It’ll take a good few months to mitigate the hazardous materials that are inside, and the builder might be pulling things out (that) they want to save that are part of it.”

“But then, the actual demolition will probably go fairly quickly.”

McDonald says anything that could be salvaged has already been saved.

He adds some people are starting to feel sentimental now that the old building is about to be torn down.

“There is a lot of that sentimental feeling, but, we’ve had a lot of time to transition to the new school. We’ve also had a lot of time to make peace with it.”

“The (old) Composite High School is very near and dear to the community because, for the longest time, it was the only high school we had in the public school division.”

McDonald says that meant that everyone who graduated in the public division prior to the opening of Charles Spencer High School graduated from the Comp.

“For the last 10 years, we’ve had a second high school and people are starting to embrace the concept.”

“Once they moved into the new school, they started to feel a little bit differently about seeing the old school go away.”

The new edition of the Comp opened in time for the current school year. It is located just west of where the old one sits.
