Grande Prairie YAC plans busy week of Youth Week activities

May 1-7 is National Youth Week, and the city’s Youth Advisory Council is planning a number of activities for that week for people aged 12 to 24.

National Youth Week is an annual celebration of youth that creates events and activities filled with exploration, interaction and fun.

Among the activities being planned are:

· Youth Week reading list with the Grande Prairie Library.

· Podcasting for Social Change: Allyship, Action and Storytelling Workshop with the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre.

· Introverts Unite! Book Club with the Grande Prairie Library.

· Resume creation or review with EmployAbilities.

· Drop-in sports activities at the Activity & Reception Centre.

· Homework Club for new immigrant students with the Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers.

· Chess Club.

· Youth Advisory Council mixer.

· Public skating at the Design Works Centre.

· Build your Own Charcuterie Workshop with the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention (SPRC).

· Drop-in volleyball and walking track at the Eastlink Centre.

· Taco night and mental wellbeing session with SPRC.

· Star Wars ‘May the Fourth’ bookmark activity with the Grande Prairie Library.

· Youth Sober Social Hall with HeARTh Social Profit Company.

· Community Helpers Program Workshop with SPRC.

· Scavenger hunt at the Grande Prairie Museum.

· Entry to How Does a Moose See the World? exhibit at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.

· Comic book day craft with the Grande Prairie Library.

· Try-it: Sledge Hockey with the Grande Prairie Wolverines.

In a release, the city says Youth Week aims to build a strong connection between youth and their community by highlighting local activities, promoting youth-serving agencies and showcasing the importance of youth connection.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says “National Youth Week is an important event showcasing the many youth-friendly activities available in our community which support an inclusive and caring community and active lifestyle.”
