Wildfire rating increased for GP Forest area

The province has moved the wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie Forest Management area to moderate.

There have been two wildfires in the area since the start of the year, which have burned a combined 1.42 hectares of forest.

There was also one holdover fire from 2022, which officials list as being under control.

The province says hazard reduction burning in the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation area has resulted in 32 hectares being burned since April 13.

They add the burning is an efficient way of removing dead and dry grass, which lessens the risk of human caused wildfires, as well as help protect homes and the community from future wildfires.
