Jail sentence in child pornography case

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man charged after a 2021 child pornography arrest has been given a one year jail sentence.

Dennis Mossey pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of child pornography. Two other charges were withdrawn.

He was arrested by Grande Prairie RCMP and ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit on June 30, 2021, after a tip from the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom.

Police alleged at the time that Mossey had been sharing what ALERT called sexual abuse materials via social media.

Computers and electronic devices were seized from his home.

June sentencing date in child pornography case

Alberta Justice says a June 29 sentencing date has been set for a Grande Prairie man who had been scheduled to stand trial on child pornography charges.

Curt Backlund pleaded guilty to charges of accessing and possession of child pornography. He had been scheduled to stand trial April 11 to 13 in Grande Prairie court.

He was one of 24 people from around Alberta charged by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit between January and April of 2021.

ALERT said at the time that ICE had what it called “a record number of case referrals” going back to 2020 and worked with police around the province to make arrests.

The referrals came from the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Centre.

Jail time for man charged in multiple drug arrests

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man has admitted to charges in two drug arrests and has been given a total of four years in jail.

Jeffrey Klimack pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property under $5,000 in relation to a 2022 arrest. He was given a 30-month sentence on those charges.

He was given 18 months to run consecutively after pleading guilty to a single charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking related to an arrest from earlier in 2023. He had been facing five charges.

RCMP said at the time that on January 29, they were doing a curfew check when the person they were checking did not answer the door.

They returned on February 3 and arrested him. Police also seized methamphetamine, crack, fentanyl, cocaine, and cash.

Klimack and another accused, Denise Pierce, were arrested in October of 2021 after a pair of searches turned up crystal meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.

A stay of proceedings was put in place in May of 2022.
