County supporting Camp Tamarack expansion

A partnership between the County of Grande Prairie and Camp Tamarack has led to the revision of public land, for residents to use free of charge.

Land located south of Secondary Highway 668 (Correction Line) and east of Highway 40, has been converted to a provincial recreation lease, with a portion allocated for Camp Tamarack to use and manage. County council supported this by approving $14,000 in community assistance grant funding.

Council also helped support the addition of new infrastructure for the now Tamarack Recreation Area, which included bear-proof garbage cans and picnic benches, by approving $15,000 for the project.

Bob Marshall Reeve of the County said in a release, “The County welcomed the opportunity to help secure and enhance this recreation area within our municipal border for everyone to enjoy for years to come.”

The County will manage the Tamarack Recreation Area, which will be officially open to the public, later this year, after working with many groups and services, including Camp Tamarack, local MLAs, and the Public Land’s Office.

Camp Tamarack Vice President and Chairman of the Land Committee, Ken Belke said in a release, “This is an example of a not-for-profit and municipal government working together for the good of the community.”

He added their organization has been providing inclusive and barrier-free outdoor experiences to the public for over 30 years and pursued this expansion in order to provide even more nature-focused outdoor education opportunities.
