Elections Alberta outlines alternate voting plans for communities hit by wildfires

May 20, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Elections Alberta says that ensuring everyone gets a chance to vote in the provincial election is a priority, even with the evacuations caused by the wildfires.

It says the fires have impacted five constituencies, including Central Peace-Notley, Peace River, and Lesser Slave Lake.

Advanced voting is scheduled for May 23 to 27 but will not take place in Fox Creek as the community has been evacuated.

There will be an advance poll at the Allan and Jean Miller Centre in Whitecourt, which has doubled as a reception centre for evacuees.

The other closest advance poll will be at the Valleyview Memorial Centre.

Voters can actually use the Vote Anywhere Service to vote at any of the 300 advance polls in Alberta.

Alternate polls have been set up for election day for several communities.

The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation poll has been moved to the Valleyview Memorial Hall. Evacuees that have gone to Edmonton can vote at the Elections Alberta office.

The poll that was to be at the Community Hall in East Prairie has been moved to the Royal Canadian Legion in High Prairie. Evacuees in Slave Lake can vote at the Northern Lakes College campus.

Peavine Metis Settlement evacuees in Slave Lake can also vote at Northern Lakes College. The election day poll in that community has been moved from the Peavine Recreation Centre to the Kapawe’No Community Hall.
