A teacher from Isabel Campbell School has been recognized for her contributions towards promoting social and emotional learning through Classroom Champions.

Edna Schellenberg was recently presented with the Energizing Communities Champion Award.

Schellenberg, a grade 8 teacher at the school, has partnered with Classroom Champions for the past five years.

The program provides an opportunity for students to connect virtually with a world-class athlete, and embark on a year-long curriculum centered around the mindset of the athlete.

Throughout the year, the students learn about areas such as goal setting, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership, and pick up invaluable strategies along the way.

In a news release, Schellenberg says “Students learn that these athletes are real people facing real obstacles, making the experience deeply personal.”

She adds her goal with the program is to inspire students to strive for excellence in their personal and academic lives.

This marks the first time that a teacher from Grande Prairie has received this award.
