LIBRARY MURALS

Indigenous murals created for Wembley schools

Jun 16, 2023 | 1:00 PM

The libraries at two Wembley schools are now home to special indigenous murals painted specifically for each school.

Local indigenous artists and NIHA Cultural navigator for the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre Natascha Okimaw worked with the administration at both schools to capture their ideas and visions for these unique murals.

The mural at Wembley Elementary School features an elder telling a story to youth, with a medicine wheel in the center that includes different coloured quadrants that feature four different animals and traditional medicines.

At Helen E Taylor school, their mural is focused on the seven sacred teachings through the use of animals, who are each set in their environment in a balanced way.

Peace Wapiti Public School District’s Indigenous Education Services would like to thank Natascha for sharing her gift and knowledge with students and staff at the two schools.
