Rainfall warning issued for Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview

Jul 25, 2023 | 4:37 PM

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area.

The weather office says as much as 50 millimetres, or two inches, could fall by Thursday evening, adding flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

People are being asked to watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are also out for areas near Fox Creek, Whitecourt and Slave Lake.

Alberta’s Minister of Forestry and Parks and Central Peace Notley MLA Todd Loewen says parts of Alberta have been lucky in getting all the rain that has fallen lately.

“That’s definitely alleviated a lot of the concerns with fires. It’s still pretty dry in the far north and there are still a lot of fires up there and we still have a lot of work to do up there.”

Loewen is hoping the drier areas get more rain.

“That High Level-La Crete area. Rainbow Lake. Manning. Those are all areas that are very dry right now that could sure use a lot more moisture and help us along in that firefighting.”

Loewen says the crops in the southern and central areas of the Peace “haven’t been too bad.”

He adds crops farther north are suffering from drought.

“It is amazing the difference between the south Peace and north Peace as far as amount of moisture that we have received. Hopefully we’ll get some more of that moisture in the north. I know some of it is going to be too late for the crops in the far north and the north Peace even.”

The wildfire hazards across northern Alberta are rated moderate or low.
