GP engineering technologist helps invent gait analysis device nominated for provincial award

A Grande Prairie resident helped invent a device that has been nominated for a provincial honour.

Engineering technologist Frank Gauthier was part of a team of NAIT biomedical engineering technology students who invented a portable gait analysis device that has been named a finalist for the Capstone Project of the Year Award.

Gauthier says the Tippy Tappy Toes or ‘T3’ collects real-time foot angle data as well as heel and toe touch-down and lift-off data and wirelessly transmits it to a workstation for analysis, where it can be used to create rehabilitation games for patients recovering from spinal cord damage or other injuries.

“Incorporating the data into games could make treatments more fun for the patients,” Gauthier says. “And may ultimately lead to improvements in their outcomes by making their treatment more enjoyable and motivating.”

Gauthier says the games are created using the unity engine.

“[Unity] essentially manipulates the 3-D model of the shoe and mimics the rotation of the patient’s foot,” he says. “And has a camera view that can be rotated around the shoe model, zoom in or out, and you can record and slowdown playback of the walking session to get a better idea of the patient’s walking cycle.”

The winning project will be announced at the end of October.
