Alberta North Zone Indigenous Support Line success, leads to expansion

Aug 27, 2023 | 12:01 PM

A first of it’s kind Indigenous Support Line, fielded more than 600 calls since its launch in Alberta’s North Zone, in June of 2022.

The line was designed to not be a substitute for 911, but to help Indigenous people navigate AHS’s vast and complex system, finding them the help they require, faster.

Whether it’s mental health support, a translator, addiction-related, cultural support, or just questions about AHS practices, Cheryl Sheldon, co-chair of the Wisdom Council, says in a release, ““The support line connects individuals with someone who listens with patience, spirituality, acceptance, caring and empathy.”

Early stats reveal that since its creation, until the end of March 2023, 596 calls have been received, with most being answered within 10 minutes.

Follow-up survey’s with clients also suggest a lot of success, as 97 percent of the people who took the survey, said they would use the line again and recommend it to friends and family.

This success has led to an expansion of the line, with the South Zone receiving its in May, and the Central Zone getting one more recently, on August 9.

AHS Wisdom Councillor, Casey Eagle Speaker said in a release, “the line is creating a brave space where our people can speak their truth, a place where they can feel supported asking for guidance and help navigating a complex healthcare system.”

The line is available weekdays, from noon to 8 p.m., and can be reached by dialing 1-844-944-4744.
