City Hall getting applications under the Clean Energy Improvement Program

Sep 14, 2023 | 5:34 PM

City Hall says the Clean Energy Improvement Program has accepted close to three dozen applications since it opened in May.

Chief Financial Officer Danielle Whiteway says it is administered by Alberta Municipalities with the city providing funding.

“(Alberta Municipalities) walks the property owners through the process. They review all applications. They ensure that the projects will create energy efficiencies within the home.”

“Once the application has been approved by (Alberta Municipalities) and the City of Grande Prairie, a contractor set to do the work will receive a deposit. When the project is completed, (Alberta Municipalities) will pay the contractor directly for all improvements.”

Whiteway says program participants pay the money back through their tax bill over the useful life of whatever improvements are made.

Those can include new doors and windows, new heating, new lighting, and solar panels.

“I’ll give an example. If you installed new windows and it’s estimated that those windows would last you 15 to 20 years, then you’d repay the cost of those windows over the course of 15 or 20 years on your tax bill.”

Council approved $2.5. million in funding for this at its last meeting on September 5. This will be funded through borrowing; a Federation of Canadian Municipalities grant to cover administration costs and money from a reserve fund.

Applications can be sent in through the Alberta Municipalities website.
